Mile Marker #1: Memoir by Amy McCallister Ethel

What a Small Town taught me about Life, Love & Leadership

Excerpt:

It’s always best to start at the beginning….” – Glenda the Good Witch, The Wizard of Oz

I came into this world in the middle of a storm. An actual “THIS IS THE EMERGENCY BROADCAST SYSTEM- THIS NOT A TEST” storm. The winds and rain were so severe that the electricity at Cabell Huntington Hospital in West Virginia went OFF (and the backup generators kicked ON.) In more ways than one, it was a kind of foreshadowing (or unfortunate metaphor) for what would be my journey on this crazy ride called “LIFE.”

When life hits like wave after wave of rain and the thunder is SO LOUD that you can’t even remember your middle name, having a firm foundation and knowing where you ARE (if only in that moment).

This is why I decided to write this book. As I look back on my life,  I can mentally picture and REMEMBER distinct markers. Days, weeks, years that I “bookmark” in my brain and think “THIS is a big deal.” or “That is when everything changed.” Or “THIS EVENT shaped my understanding of __________.” (Fill in the blank of whatever life happens to throw at any given moment).

So buckle up buttercup, because here we go. Life in Kenova (as I experienced it growing up) in “Almost Heaven.” “Mountain Mama.”  The good, the bad, the sad and mad. Ups and downs. Trauma. Struggles and victories. Suffering and getting well. Breaking cycles. Changing lives.
